Monica has, in fact, a life in the arts as well as in research, and the article describes both.

"This is a piece on my path through science, engineering, death and dying, fantasy and science fiction," Monica says. "Spurred by a talk on digital necromancy in Glasgow where I used fiction as models, this is the first piece in which my worlds are brought together."

As a nonbinary person, the article has yet another important dimension for Monica. "This article is for me a step forward to visibility," they explain. "The Women in Engineering magazine's section says 'women to watch', and that's viscerally adequate. Even though I am not one, the tech academic community has been perceiving and treating me like a woman, with all the inequities and indignities."

At SEFAS, we get to use Monica's unique imagination, ingenuity, and systems engineering skills to combine medicine and digital innovation into a real difference for elderly care and society. Monica works across all our projects, being the main technology designer, focusing on developing digital biomarkers for symptom tracking in real-world everyday life for older adults, persons with dementia including the end of life, and Parkinson’s disease.
