What Are the Consequences of the Russian Invasion on Ukrainian Society? Individual-level Evidence from the European Social Survey (ESS)

Alexander Verdoes, researcher on the Norwegian European Social Survey (ESS) team at the Department of Government, will present findings from the latest ESS round in Ukraine. Following the presentation, the floor will be opened for discussion with representatives from ESS Ukraine, who are visiting Norway.

Alexander Verdoes is a researcher on the Norwegian European Social Survey (ESS) team at the Department of Government. He will present findings from the latest ESS round in Ukraine, exploring how the Russian invasion has influenced Ukrainian society. The presentation draws on data from ESS rounds 10 (January–February 2022) and 11 (April–June 2024), comparing the situation in Ukraine before and after the war began.

ESS Norway is also hosting a Ukrainian delegation responsible for coordinating ESS data collection in Ukraine. The delegation will join the discussion following the presentation, offering valuable insights into the challenges of conducting fieldwork in a conflict zone.

Light lunch will be served, as first come, first served.

The event is hybrid, if you can not join us in the Corner room at Sofie Lindstrøms hus, you can join us digitally. (external link)

Abstract

How the Russian invasion of Ukraine has influenced Ukrainian society is a central
question for understanding how the war influenced Ukrainian society, postwar
reconstruction, institution-building in Ukraine, and is a key question in conflict
and war studies. In this research note, we explore how the Russian invasion has
affected the attitudes and behaviors of people living in Ukraine. We use data
from the European Social Survey (ESS) Round 10, fielded in January–February
2022 (just before the invasion), and Round 11, fielded two years into the war
(April–June 2024). On average, we find that after two years of war the daily
lives of Ukrainians remain mostly unaffected, we observe clear rally-around-the-flag effects (greater emotional attachment to Ukraine, stronger perceived need
for loyalty to political leaders, and lower partisanship), and we observe a decline
in trust in the United Nations (UN) alongside increased attachment to Europe
and support for European integration.
