Annelid research
The annelid research at the Department of Natural History focuses on the biodiversity, systematics, and evolution of marine species, with a special interest in the fauna of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.
About the research group
Annelids, also known as ringworms, often dominate in terms of density, biomass, and species richness in marine soft-bottom communities, playing a crucial role in marine ecosystems. Despite the long history of annelid research in the North Atlantic, many species remain undescribed, with poorly understood distribution patterns and dispersal abilities. Our research on marine annelids focuses on the biodiversity, systematics, and phylogeny of Nordic species, along with global revisions of certain groups. We make significant contributions to building a DNA barcode library for the North Atlantic and Arctic annelid fauna, extending from western Africa to the Barents Sea.
