Spring 2026

21 January: Mats Skare, UiB: PhD final seminar (Sluttseminar)

Time: 10.00-12.00

Place: to be announced

Opponent: Birgit Maixner, NTNU

Mats' PhD project, “Clangorous Beasts – A Survey of Metal-Detected Artefacts and Animal Representations from west and east Norway, c. AD 550–750/800”, assesses the source value of metal detected finds from the period AD 550–750/800. It then links the artefacts adorned with animal style and animal representations to the period’s mentality.

18. February: William van Hemelryck, UiB: Space and social organization: Investigating the potential of fractal analysis for outland research

Time: 14.15-16.00

Place: Sydnesplassen 12/13, room 130

Presentation in English.

Abstract:

In a Viking and Medieval context, most spatial analyses have focused on relatively complex settlements and house constructions. In south-western Norway, however, most sites are small, simple and found in the outlands. Consequently, they are not well suited for these traditional analysis techniques. Therefore, there is a need to analyse the spatial properties of these sites in a new manner. Using iron production at Gråfjell as a case study, this presentation investigates the potential of fractal analysis for the study of outland sites.

12. March: Valerio Sordillo, Universita degli Studi della Campania: Material culture during the Middle Ages in northern and inland Campania (Italy)

Time: 14.15-16.00

Place: Sydnesplassen 12/13, room 130

Abstract to follow

Presentation in English.

Time: 14.15-16.00

Place: Sydneshaugen skole, Auditorium Q

This lecture is given in connection with Arkeologisk forskningsseminar.

13. May: Visa immonen (UiB): Circular economies in the urban metabolism of the late medieval Nordic towns

Time: 14.15-16.00

Place: Sydnesplassen 12/13, room 130

Abstract to follow
