On 22-23 September, the CSSR Annual Conference 2026 (external link) was held in Bergen, gathering a myriad of attendees from academia, industry and public sector participating in the subsurface research. This year's conference explored the opportunities and consequences of electrification of offshore operations, spotlighting cutting-edge research within petroleum, CCS and underground energy storage.

The two-day event was opened by Prof. Martin Fernø, who also serves as a Centre Deputy at CSSR and leads the focus area on subsurface understanding. Prof. Fernø and Assoc. Prof. Jakub Both moderated sessions throughout the conference, introducing both local and international speakers from across the energy sector.

One of the speakers was Dr. Na Liu, who delivered a talk titled “Trends in Porous Media Laboratory Imaging and Open Science Practices.” PhD students Melito Soares and Hasan Gürsel also presented their research posters on stage.

The conference featured panel discussions, presentations, and networking opportunities with distinguished guests, including State Secretary Snorre Erichsen Skjevrak of the Norwegian Ministry of Energy, Senior Advisor Lars Erik Walle from the Research Council of Norway, Prof. Martin Blunt from Imperial College London, and Prof. Sebastian Geiger from TU Delft, among many others. The event provided a valuable and enriching experience for both staff and students alike.
