Open, Reproducible and Transparent Science in Ecology

BIO940 – Reproducible workflows to manage, produce, use, and reuse FAIR data
Universities, journals, and funding bodies increasingly demand open and reproducible research practices across the scientific community. Research data needs to be FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable), workflows must be reproducible, and science must be transparent.
The University of Bergen and Living Norway offer a hands-on course on methods and technologies to make research more open, reproducible, and transparent.
Key topics covered:
- Data wrangling, functions, R packages, reproducible documents, GitHub, reproducible environments, and pipeline tools
- Data publishing, storing, sharing, and reusing in relation to GBIF biodiversity data and Darwin Core Standards.
- Computer programming using the GBIF API (Application Programming Interface).
- Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for supported programming.
Target Audience
The course is aimed at PhD students (who will be prioritised) as well as early-career researchers (MSc, postdocs) in ecology and related fields who produce their own data, use secondary data, or both. Some technical knowledge of programming in R is an advantage.
Course Details
- Dates: 19 – 24 October 2026
- Location: Finse Research Station (external link), Norway
- Credits: 3 ECTS credits, issued by the University of Bergen upon active participation and completion of exercises.
- Course Fee: Approximately 4000 NOK (includes accommodation and meals). Note: Participants must organise and pay for their own travel to Finse.

Format
We invite experts to give specialised lectures and provide hands-on training to practice your new skills. While we provide examples, we highly encourage students to bring their own data and coding problems to work on.
