Historic garden plants

Old garden plants have great biological and cultural history value. Over a long time, they have adapted to the local climate and have qualities that are often lacking in modern cultivars. Part of this diversity is threatened because old cultivars are disappearing and being replaced by new ones.

In Blondehushagen, the museum gardens collect old ornamental plants, fruit and berry cultivars, and useful plants with a known history from before 1900, mainly sourced from gardens in Western Norway, and in the Rosarium we preserve old rose cultivars as a national genetic resource.Old garden plants have great biological and cultural history value. Gjennom lang tid har de tilpasset seg det lokale klimaet og har egenskaper som ofte mangler hos moderne sorter. Deler av dette mangfoldet er truet fordi gamle sorter forsvinner og erstattes av nye.

I Blondehushagen samler Universitetshagene gamle prydplanter, frukt- og bærsorter og nytteplanter med kjent historie fra før 1900, hovedsakelig hentet fra hager på Vestlandet, og i Rosariet bevarer vi gamle rose sorter som nasjonalt genressurs.
