This year, the NutriNOR PhD Conference will take us to the north of Norway. Join us in Tromsø on 28-29 October to explore the topic of AI in nutrition research!

Our PhD students in Tromsø have prepared an exciting programme that focuses on the use of AI in nutrition research. Through a combination of lectures and workshops you will learn how to use AI in your PhD – whether you are writing papers or working on your thesis. The sessions will include hands-on activities where you can apply these tools to your own project.

Topics will include using AI for literature reviews, data extraction, and hypothesis generation, as well as addressing concerns like data quality, bias, and ethics. You’ll also learn how AI can analyze food images to promote healthier and more sustainable food choices. Additionally, there will be a dedicated session where you can present your own research if you want to.

The programme will be relevant to candidates at any stage of their PhD education as the principles can be applied in different phases of a PhD project.

A tentative programme can be found on this link. (PDF)

Invited speakers

Marko Lukic is a medical doctor with PhD in epidemiology, currently working as university lecturer at HelPed, UiT and the leader of UiT’s AI team. His talk will examine how large language models assist in literature review, data extraction from dietary studies, and hypothesis generation for nutrient–disease relationships. It will also address concerns about data quality, model bias, and ethical considerations when deploying these models in nutritional research.

Maryam Tayefi Nasrabadi is statistician with long experience in analysing health data sets using classical statistical methods and machine learning algorithms. She is currently working as a senior researcher at the Norwegian Centre for E-health Research. Her talk will focus on how generative AI can be leveraged to analyze food images and create a food system that helps consumers make healthier, more sustainable food choices. She will share insights and practical examples from AI-SHeFMan, a research project developed by Maryam and her team.

Presentations of your own work

You are welcome to prepare a short presentation (8-10 min) of your own work. Registered participants will receive information on how to sign up for this along with further details. Since this is a national conference, you should be able to achieve ECTS points for your presentation. However, this will depend on the regulations of your own institution

All costs included

Participation is free of charge, and the hotel costs, lunch and dinner on Oct 28th are already covered by NutriNOR. Travel costs will also be covered directly by NutriNOR. Information about travel arrangements will be sent to all registered participants.

Hotel rooms will be booked for all participants who travel to Tromsø at Scandic Ishavshotel (same as venue).

Transport from the airport to the venue/hotel

Take the bus across the road from the airport (number 40 Tromsø museum via sentrum or 42 Stakkevollan via sentrum) to Wi-To (13-19 minutes). Walk 4 minutes down towards the sea to Scandic Ishavshotel. It is recommended to download the public transport app (Svipper) beforehand and buy tickets via th
