Internship at the Center for Digital Narrative

Undergraduate course

Course description

Objectives and Content

This course provides students with the opportunity to be interns at the Center for Digital Narrative (CDN), a Center of Research Excellence at the University of Bergen.

Students will gain experience working as a researcher on a topic related to digital narrative. By participating in an active research team students will be able to put their knowledge of digital culture to use and develop research skills. The internship will also provide experience with teamwork and collaboration in a professional setting. Students will be assigned to a project at CDN, and will participate in research activities working as a researcher in a team. In most cases each team will only have one student intern, and other team members will usually be PhD students and senior researchers. Research methods can range from creative development and experimentation to critical theory to narrative analysis to digital humanities methodologies, depending on the project. Students will also contribute to research communication and organisation of workshops. The course is a good choice for students interested in pursuing a career in research.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the internship, the student should have the following total learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

  • Have knowledge of digital storytelling.
  • Familiarity with a variety of methods in research and creative development.

Skills

  • Use the professional knowledge gained from studying digital culture in a real work situation.
  • Combine theory with experiential learning and reflect on the relationship between theory and practice.
  • Form a picture of how a research environment organizes its work.
  • Reflect more consciously on one's own competence and discuss the use of professional competence in practice.
  • Critically evaluate your own internship.

Access to the Course

The following requirements for study progression and grades apply:

  • The course is limited to students on the Bachelor of Digital Culture who have achieved a grade of B or higher on average in the specialization course and/or program course in the degree.
  • Standardized study progression will be emphasized.

There will only be 1-2 internships each semester, depending on capacity at CDN. Before April 15/October 15 of the previous semester, CDN will post information about the current project that is seeking internship students on the page for the Bachelor of Digital Culture program at Mitt UiB. Students can then apply for an internship by submitting a letter of application and CV to studierettleiar.lle@uib.no in the same way as a job application.

Applicants who meet the requirements above will be assessed on the basis of the application and CV they submit, and may also be assessed through a job interview at the internship company (CDN).

The course cannot be taken without an approved internship.

Application deadline:

May 15 (fall) / November 15 (spring). The application deadline is dependent on the semester in which the course is offered.

Send application to studierettleiar.lle@uib.no.

Teaching and learning methods

During the internship, students will have their workplace at CDN two days a week. Students will have a workplace in a shared office and will participate in project meetings, research group meetings and other relevant events at CDN in line with other researchers at the center. The workload corresponds to a 50% position where physical presence is expected two days a week. Time and location of the work beyond that is flexible.

Students will be assigned a supervisor at CDN and will develop a plan for their internship with the supervisor within the first two weeks of the internship. They will write a mid-term report that will be discussed with the supervisor. At the end of the internship, they will write a report on their research and give a presentation or demonstration on the project to other researchers at CDN.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Students have working hours at CDN two days a week for 16 weeks, where they will both work individually and participate in relevant research group meetings and other events in line with their colleagues. Internship students will also:

  • Write a 1-2 page internship plan to be approved by the CDN supervisor early in the semester;
  • Write a 2 page mid-term report to be discussed with the CDN supervisor
  • Give a 15 minute oral presentation or demo summarizing their research to other researchers at CDN
