Objectives and Content

This course offers students a further introduction to modern Mandarin. Students will develop practical writing and speaking skills in modern Mandarin as well as an expanded vocabulary, and will learn a number of Chinese characters. They will practice writing and using simple and common Chinese characters. The course also gives a practical review of the basic elements of grammar.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, students will be able to read and write simple texts and have conversations about everyday topics in Mandarin.

The students- Will have acquired basic vocabulary and grammatical understanding- Will have acquired approximately 300 words connected with daily life and 160 new characters.

Spring. Teaching in KIN102 will be offered for the last time in the spring semester of 2026. This course will then be replaced by KIN112.

Access to the Course

The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen.

Teaching and learning methods

Instruction is organized as a series of lectures and seminars. There will be 10-12 hours of teaching a week, for 6 weeks during the second half of the semester.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

This course has 5 at-home assignments. In order to be eligible to take the exam, students must turn in and have 4 of these assignments approved, and attend 75 % of the classes. In addition, the students must give and pass minimum one oral presentation in class in order to qualify for the exam.

The compulsory course assignments are valid for one semester after the semester of instruction.

Forms of Assessment

A four-hour written exam in grammar and reading and writing skills.

Grading Scale

The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a failing grade.

Assessment Semester

The exam is offered in the same semester as the course as well as in the following semester for those who have completed the compulsory course assignments.

The last semester the exam will be offered is the spring semester 2027.

A textbook for new beginners, workbook, and multimedia tools.

Course Evaluation

The teaching will be evaluated according to the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen.
