Course description

Objectives and Content

The objective of the course is to give an overview of smaller organic compounds grouped after their most important functional groups, including their preparation and reactions. The course will also cover organic nomenclature, reaction mechanisms and central concepts in organic chemistry like various types of isomerism. Important aspects of organic chemistry in the society will be incorporated as examples from everyday life, pharmacy, nature and industry.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course KJEM130 the student will have the following:

Knowledge

The student

  • knows about the main groups of smaller organic compounds including their preparation and most important chemical reactions,
  • knows about basic organic nomenclature,
  • knows about main reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry, and
  • knows about concepts of isomerism.

Skills

The student

  • is able to reason a name from the formula of an organic compound and vice versa,
  • is able to prepare theoretically the main groups of smaller organic compounds,
  • is able to connect the structure of the main groups of smaller organic compounds to their properties in organic reactions,
  • is able to use knowledge about specific reaction mechanism to judge how the structure of the reagents and the solvent influence the products formed in organic chemical reactions, and
  • is able to use knowledge about isomerism to judge how the structure of the reagents influence the products formed in organic chemical reactions.

Competences

The student

  • is able to communicate both in written and oral forms the central concepts of organic chemistry by using the typical `tools of organic chemistry (drawing of structures of organic compounds (including isomeric details), organic reactions and reaction mechanisms) - also applicable in the fields of pharmacy (medicine), food, environment and industry.

Access to the Course
Access to the course requires admission to a programme of study at the Faculty of Science and Technology.
Forms of Assessment
  • Midterm written digital examination (2 hours), 30 % of total grade,
  • Written digital examination (4 hours), 70 % of total grade.

Supplementary exam-regulations:

1. Midterm and final exams are only valid in the same semester they are taken.

2. In semester with regular teaching: The students must take both the midterm examination and the final exam.

3. In semesters without regular teaching: The final exam will account for 100 % of the grade in the subject.

Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade on the scale, grade F is a fail.
Assessment Semester
Examination both spring semester and autumn semester. In semesters without teaching the examination will be arranged at the beginning of the semester.
Reading List
The reading list will be available within July 1st for the autumn semester and December 1st for the spring semester
