Course description
Objectives and Content
Objectives: The course is designed to enhance the candidates' knowledge about medical education research and their abilities to evaluate the scientific quality and practical relevance of publications within the field.
Content: The course is organized as a journal club based on the candidates' individual in-depth study of selected literature followed by group discussions. Teaching consists of a 3-hour introduction (seminar-based teaching) and monthly meetings of two hours each.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence
Knowledge:
The student
- Has basic knowledge of the topics relevant for the medical education research field
- Can explain the most common methods and research designs used to study education and learning in medicine and the health professions
- Understands the considerations underlying the use of qualitative vs. quantitative methods in educational research
- Has basic insight into the most important scientific journals where medical education research is published
Skills:
The student
- Can analyze research articles within the field of medical education
- Can conduct literature searches and identify research articles relevant to specific educational questions and issues
- Can extract the essence of and apply knowledge from the research field in their own teaching and other educational practices
General competence:
The student
- Can summarize and communicate research-based knowledge from the medical education research field to colleagues
- Can participate in academic discussions about research quality and results from a non-positivist scientific paradigm

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
The course consists of the following compulsory components:
- Half day introduction
- Seven small group meetings discussing medical education publications
- A written review of a self-selected article
Forms of Assessment
Participants can choose between the following two options:
The course provides 2 ECTS credits if the student completes all the compulsory assignments described above.
The course provides 3 ECTS credits if the candidate, in addition to the compulsory assignments described above, completes a final practical exam. For the exam, the candidate must create a podcast (20-30 minutes in length) discussing a research article, either individually or in collaboration with others.
Grading scale: Pass / Fail
