Objectives and Content

Objectives

The course will provide a practical introduction to the psychological evaluation and treatment of mental disorders among clients.

Contents

Through the counseling of a specialist in psychology, the students will be given a practical introduction to the role of the clinical psychologist and the practical use of research-based knowledge and methods related to common social and health related issues, included child neglect, bullying, violence, abuse, drugs- and socio-economic problems, and to provide essential intervention and/or treatment, or admit for further treatment when necessary. Ethical reflection around the role of the psychologist and respectful communication with clients will be strongly emphasized, included analyses and critical reflection concerning complex professional issues, different roles and possibilities in the work with various types of mental disorders, and to collaboration and delegation of tasks between various service levels.

The course is taught over three semesters (8, 9 and 10) and is connected to the teaching provided in PRPSY311A, PRPSYK311B, PRPSYK312A, PRPSYK312B, PRPSYK312C, and PRPSYK313.

Upon completion of the course, the student should have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student will be able to...

  • conceptualise and analyse the clients’ need for psychological treatment
  • reflect on the use of research-based knowledge in psychological evaluation and treatment
  • plan and implement interventions for treatment and prevention adapted to the individual problems, resources, phase of life and the sociocultural context of the client
  • analyse ethical dilemmas in psychological treatment

Skills

The student will be able to...

  • explain the client’s problems and resources and prepare a case formulation with a treatment plan in mind
  • treat milder mental disorders under competent supervision
  • apply research-based clinical psychology knowledge in order to understand the client’s problems and ensure the best possible treatment outcome
  • assess assistive measures in the event of risk of suicide, self-harm and psychosis
  • carry out record-keeping and document the treatment in line with good professional ethics and the applicable laws and regulations
  • use systematic feedback provided by the clients in order to optimize the treatment outcomes and prevent deterioration
  • use digital platforms to provide treatment

General competence

The student...

  • will have an ethical and knowledge-based ability to reflect on the role and the obligations related to the work of a psychologist
  • can demonstrate independent clinical psychology work
  • can demonstrate the ability to make proper choices in the clinical psychology work situation

Teaching and learning methods

Students receive training in one of the treatment sections at the Psychological University Outpatient Clinic (Section for Children and Adolescents 1, Section for Children and Adolescents 2, Section for Young People and Adults, and Section for Adults and the Elderly).

The teaching is structured as follows:

8th Semester

  • Clinic-focused, theme- and skills-oriented supervision in groups of up to eight students
  • Problem-based learning
  • Recommended literature (list available in Leganto)
  • 6 hours of teaching per week for 18 weeks

9th and 10th Semester

  • Clinical patient work
  • Supervision in groups of up to four students
  • Problem-based learning
  • 10 hours of teaching per week for 36 weeks
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

General

Active participation and (80%) attendance in the supervision team under the guidance of the internship supervisor.

Approval of the following mandatory coursework:

8th Semester

  • Prepare a case formulation and treatment plan

9th and 10th Semester

  • Presentation of a therapeutic challenge
  • Presentation at "staff"

Patient Work

Unless specific circumstances related to patient cases dictate otherwise, each student must have conducted treatment for at least two patients, with a total of at least 30 hours of supervised psychological treatment completed during the internship before approval. The following sub-tasks are included in the treatments:

  • Training in the use of the electronic journal system
  • Training in the use of audio/video recording in treatment
  • Treatment initiation and establishment of contact
  • Record-keeping
  • Assessment
  • Preparation of case formulation/treatment plan
  • Treatment
  • Termination of treatment

All mandatory teaching activities and coursework must be approved before the course can be assessed as Pass/Fail.

Forms of Assessment

The following assessment methods are used in the course: Practical Training (Internship). This includes the following mandatory coursework:

  • The supervisor’s documentation of the student’s areas of experience and tasks.
  • The supervisor’s assessment of the student’s psychological competence in interactions with patients.
  • The supervisor’s evaluation of the student’s performance in relation to general duties at the outpatient clinic.
  • Practice-related assignments.

Ongoing assessments are conducted by the supervisor each semester. Each semester must be assessed as Passed before a student can proceed to the next. All elements of the practical training in the 8th, 9th, and 10th semesters must be approved for PRPSYK314 to be considered passed.

Approval of the internship or delays in completion may be considered upon application.

Number of attempts: 2Students who do not pass the course have the opportunity to retake it once.

Course Evaluation
This course is evaluated every 3rd year in line with the procedures for participatory evaluation at the Faculty of Psychology and the quality assurance system at the University of Bergen.
