Course description
Objectives and Content
Goal:
The course seeks to enable students to conduct advanced quantitative analyses using modern methods and statistical techniques.
Content:
The course covers topics like causal inference, quantitative text analysis and machine learning. Focus is on applied analysis. The teaching is divided into two distinct blocks, one dealing primarily with causal inference and the other with modern regression analysis, quantitative text analysis and machine learning.
Learning Outcomes
A student who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
- Be well-acquainted with several of the main techniques in modern quantitative methods
- Identify theoretically motivated research questions that can be examined empirically
Skills
- Be able to conduct rigorous statistical analyses using available statistical software
- Be able to present the results of their analyses in a clear and systematic manner

- Conduct statistical analyses based on data collected by the students themselves

Access to the Course
The course is open for students who have been accepted into the Master's program in comparative politics.
Guest students at the master level may be accepted upon application. The Department requires a minimum average grade of 3,0 in the academic specialization. Applications may be rejected due to capacity.
The maximum number of students in this course is 15 students.

Forms of Assessment
Portfolio assessment with two statistical essay, maximum 3000 word each. Each essay will contribute 50 % towards the final grade. The portfolio will be assessed as a whole, and one final grade will be given.
An essay that has been previously graded in SAMPOL332 cannot be resubmitted unless the student shows that the essay includes a new research question, new data or contains a radically different interpretation of the empirical findings (see "Utfyllende grads- og studiereglement for Det samfunnsvitskaplege fakultet").
The exam will be given in the language in which the course is taught.
The exam can be submitted in English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
