Norwegian Courses for employees and partners

Are you an international employee at the University of Bergen, or the partner or spouse of an international employee? If so, you can take free Norwegian courses. Here you will find information about how to apply and the relevant deadlines.

Who can apply?

International staff at the University of Bergen, as well as their partners or spouses, may apply for admission to Norwegian language courses through Søknadsweb.

The courses are open to all international staff at UiB, including PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows, as well as their partners or spouses.

To be eligible to apply, the employee must have an employment contract with UiB that runs for at least four months during the semester in which the course is offered.

PhD candidates who are not employed by UiB must apply for Norwegian language courses as students. More information is available on the page for international students.

How to apply

International employees at the University of Bergen and their partners may apply for admission to NOR-U1, NOR-U1/2, NOR-U2 (except Group B), NOR-U3 (except Group B), NOR-U4, and NOR-NYN (Norwegian Nynorsk course).

Application periods

  • Autumn semester: 15 March to 5 June
  • Spring semester: 1 October to 30 November

Applications must be submitted through Søknadsweb.

All applicants must submit their own application. It is not possible to apply on behalf of someone else.

You must submit your application even if you are waiting for results that form the basis for admission to the course you are applying for.

Admission to courses with prerequisite requirements

After you have applied, you will be invited to take a placement test unless you have passed a relevant Norwegian language course at the University of Bergen or submitted documentation of having passed an equivalent Norwegian language course at another Norwegian university.

This does not apply to applicants for NOR-U1 and NOR-U1/2, as these courses have no prerequisite requirements.

Application deadlines for Spring 2027

  • Søknadsweb opens: 1 October
  • Application deadline: 30 November

New applicants to intermediate and advanced-level courses will be invited to take a placement test.
