Agreement on the availability of master theses

All master students at the University of Bergen are encouraged to make their thesis available in the Norwegian Research Information Repository (NVA). The University Library does not receive a printed copy of the thesis, so NVA is the only place the thesis might be accessible for others.

Benefits of making your master's thesis available in NVA

  • You can share your thesis with others in a simple and effective way.
  • The thesis becomes searchable through national and international search engines and library catalogues.
  • The thesis is given a permanent link that will provide access to it in the future as well.

Clearing rights

Do you have photographs taken by others in your thesis? Please be aware that it is your responsibility to clear the rights to these. You must ask permission to use others' images, unless permission is given through a licence that accompanies the image (e.g. Creative Commons (external link)).

Publishing

Are you going to publish the thesis as a book or article with a publisher? Then you must check the publisher's guidelines for making it available in an institutional or national archive (such as NVA) before you upload it. Some publishers do not permit the publication to also be available in an institutional archive.

Harvesting of metadata from NVA

NVA (external link) is harvested by search engines and library catalogues, so that the content in NVA becomes searchable there too. If the thesis is withdrawn from NVA, it may take some time before the information about the thesis disappears from external websites. The information will be removed the next time the search engine or catalogue harvests NVA.

The master thesis will be made available under the following conditions

  • This is an agreement between The University of Bergen Library and the author.
  • The agreement allows the University Library, on behalf of the University in Bergen, the right to deposit the author's master thesis in NVA.
  • The thesis will be available with the author's name, this includes theses with anonymous grading.
  • The author retains the copyright and has the right to withdraw the thesis from NVA at any time.
  • The thesis will be openly available on the internet for as long as UiB offers a repository. UiB has the right to transfer and make the thesis available in another archive with the same purpose as NVA, should such an archive replace NVA in the future.
  • The author is responsible for clearing copyright to material in the thesis (illustrations, graphs, images and the like).
  • The thesis may be used within the boundaries set by the Norwegian Copyright Act (external link). The work may be referred to, linked to and quoted from. It may be printed and downloaded only for personal use. Users must give appropriate credit.
  • The University of Bergen does not have the right to use the work commercially.
