Visit the University Gardens

The museum is home to several beautiful and biodiverse research and exhibition gardens. The Museum Garden is located adjacent to the museum buildings in central Bergen, while the Arboretum and the Bergen Botanical Garden are located at Milde.

Research and collections

The museum collects, preserves, researches, and shares knowledge about our cultural and natural heritage. Through research and collection management, we ensure that artefacts, photographs, archives, and natural history collections are safeguarded for future generations while also being used to generate new knowledge.

Objects and Collections Management

The collections of the University Museum comprise nearly five million objects, ranging from fossils and plants to archaeological finds and cultural-historical artifacts. These collections are part of our shared natural and cultural heritage and are continuously developed through collecting, excavations, and research.

Our museum

The University Museum of Bergen was founded in 1825 and is one of Norway’s oldest scientific institutions. The museum formed the basis for the establishment of the University of Bergen in 1946 and has, for more than 200 years, collected, preserved, researched, and shared knowledge about our shared natural and cultural heritage.
