Min forskning undersøker sammenhengene mellom arealbruk, biologisk mangfold, økosystemers funksjon og økosystemtjenester. Dette innebærer vanligvis en kombinasjon av tverrfaglig samarbeid med datasyntese og modellering. Arbeidet mitt omfatter et bredt spekter av økosystemtyper, inkludert gressmark, skog og jordbruksøkosystemer.

Tradisjonelt har forskningen min fokusert på plantesamfunn, men nylig har jeg også arbeidet med andre grupper som mikroorganismer og evertebrater. Jeg er interessert i å sammenfatte kunnskap på samfunn- og økosystem nivå, og har utviklet både teori og metoder for dette.

De siste årene har jeg utvidet arbeidet mitt til også å inkludere den menneskelige komponenten, i et sosial-økologisk systemperspektiv. Dette innebærer som regel en kvantitativ spørreundersøkelse, inkludert studier av etterspørsel for økosystemtjenester. Disse undersøkelsene blir ofte integrert med økologiske data for å måle multifunksjonalitet, som reflekterer et økosystems eller et landskaps evne til å levere de mange naturgodene mennesker behøver og ønsker seg. 

Min stilling er knyttet til Universitetet i Bergen sitt Senter for bærekraftig arealforvaltning (CESAM)
