Forskning

Kjersti Fløttum er professor i fransk språkvitenskap ved Institutt for fremmedspråk, Universitetet i Bergen. Hun var viserektor for internasjonale relasjoner 2005-2009 og medlem av universitetsstyret 2013-17 og 2017-21. Fløttum er leder av styret for den Holbergprisen 2020-2024. Hun har hatt mange lokale, nasjonale og internasjonale verv.
Forskningsinteressene hennes dekker tekst- og sjangerteori, narrative struktur, semantikk, pragmatikk, språklig polyfoni og diskursanalyse. Hoveddelen av hennes empiriske forskning er orientert mot enonsiasjon, polyfoni (flerstemthet), leksikalsk-semantiske og narrative analyser av akademisk, politisk og klimadiskurs. Hun har ledet flere store prosjekter (KIAP, EURLING, LINGCLIM) og har ofte samarbeidet i internasjonale og tverrfaglige sammenhenger. Siden 2012 har hun ledet den tverrfaglige forskergruppen LINGCLIM og leder nå CLIMLIFE-prosjektet, om motivasjon for å endre (eller ikke endre) livvstil i et klimaperspektiv, finansiert av Norges forskningsråd. Fløttum har publisert i en rekke internasjonale tidsskrift og er medforfatter av Academic Voices (2006), og redaktør av Speaking to Europe (2013) og The role of language in the climate change debate (2017).
Fløttum er medlem av Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi og av Academia Europaea.
Hun er æresdoktor ved Uppsala Universitet.

    Summary
    Climate change has in recent years moved from being mainly a physical phenomenon to being simultaneously a social, cultural and political phenomenon. At present, both individual and collective attitudes and behaviour seem an equally serious challenge in the climate issue as scientific knowledge of the phenomenon itself, and in this, language and communication are crucial. Language not only reflects and expresses, but also influences attitudes and behaviour, and thus constitutes a vital component of the cultural prerequisites underlying societal development. The overarching question of LINGCLIM is to what extent and in what way language matters in climate change interpretations.

    The primary objectives are to
    (1) generate new and integrated knowledge about the role of language in climate discourse through developing an innovative multidisciplinary methodology including an opinion survey and a psychological experiment in addition to comprehensive linguistic and discursive analyses;
    (2) investigate climate discourse in a micro-analysis focusing on specific linguistic features, and in a macro-analysis based on contextual factors established through the multidisciplinary approach;
    (3) explore the role of the perspectives of ”gloom-and-doom” vs. ”opportunities-in-a new-sustainable-society”.

    We investigate to what extent instances of climate discourse may be described through a narrative structure with up to five components and a number of potential actors (victims, villains, heroes).
    Three major challenges to be handled are to
    (1) identify relevant contextual factors to be integrated in the analysis to understand the role of the components and actors in the narrative structure;
    (2) identify explicit and hidden voices in climate discourse as well as identify what actors they represent;
    (3) unveil the relationship between linguistic representations and psychological factors such as people’s attitudes, beliefs and responses to climate change.

    Tverrfaglig prosjekt startet i 2005 (under navnet EURUN), med finansiering gjennom Meltzerfondet, strategiske midler fra Det humanistiske fakultet og fra UiB sentralt.
    I samarbeid med Sandra Halverson, Kjetil Henjum, Øivin Andersen, Sissel Rosland, Jens Kjeldsen, Eva Steigan, Jan Oskar Engene, Dag Stenvold, Øyvind Gjerstad, Anders Didriksen, Anje Müller Gjesdal, Annelise Ly og Siri Lima, samt nasjonale og internasjonale partnere.
