April 25th 2025, Martine Røysted Solås  defended her PhD dissertation «Vertical distribution of mesopelagic organisms under changing oxygen conditions: Insights from western Norwegian fjords”.  Her opponents were Tracey Dornan from the British Antarctic Survey and Johanna Myrseth Aarflot from Institute of Marine Research (IMR). The committee leader was Jarl Giske (UiB) and the disputation leader was Arild Folkvord (UiB).

Martine was supervised by main supervisor Anne Gro Vea Salvanes (UiB) and co-supervisors Dag L. Aksnes (UiB) and Arved Staby (IMR).

The thesis explores how oxygen loss might impact vertical distribution patterns by small mesopelagic fish. These organisms are important prey for many predators, and they link the surface and the deep sea through their diel vertical migrations.

Martine gave an excellent overview of her thesis before she discussed her research with the opponents.
