Mål og innhald

This course provides an overview of key aspects of Norwegian culture and history from the Viking era until today. It discusses themes central to the study of Norwegian identity, including the concept of equality, the roles of minority groups and women, and Norway's place within broader European and global networks.

Knowledge

The student will achieve insight into Norwegian culture and history and the ways the past has shaped contemporary Norwegian culture.

Qualifications

The student will have qualifications to discuss historical and contemporary phenomena and to draw their own conclusions based on their analysis.

Competence

The student will be able to present knowledge on historical and contemporary issues in Norwegian society, to analyze documents related to key themes in Norwegian culture and history, and to argue for their own conclusions in written form.

The student must be able to document at least one passed university examination in order to obtain admission to this course.

The course is offered in English only. It requires spoken and written proficiency in English.

Studiepoengsreduksjon
Due to course overlap, the credits for SAS13 will be reduced for students who have completed HIS101 (5 ECTS) or HIS102 (5 ECTS).
Krav til studierett
The course is open for students at the University of Bergen.
Arbeids- og undervisningsformer
Teaching is given in English and takes the form of lectures, field trips, workshops, and/or discussions, with approximately 30 teaching hours in total.
Obligatorisk undervisningsaktivitet
Students are required to submit a paper of 1500 words. After the submission, the students will receive a brief comment on their paper.
Vurderingsformer

7 days take home exam, a paper of approximately 3000 words.

The exam assignment will be given in English.

The exam may be written in English or Norwegian.

Karakterskala
Grades will be set using a scale of A to F.
Vurderingssemester
Autumn. Examination will also be held in the course-free term (spring) for students having passed the compulsory requirement.
Litteraturliste
The required reading list consists of approx. 1200 pages. All litterature is in English.
Emneevaluering
The course is evaluated regularly.
