Who we are
Our International Centre for Staff team is made up of HR advisers and is part of the Division of Human Resources. We are a EURAXESS Service Centre (external link) within a European network that supports researchers across borders, and UiB holds the HR Excellence in Research Award (HREiR), recognising its commitment to continuously improving the working conditions and career development of researchers.
How we can help
We support international employees and researchers with general questions related to moving to Bergen and settling in at the University of Bergen. This includes topics such as immigration and registration, electronic ID, taxation, social security, insurance, banking, and accompanying family members.
We provide guidance on matters that are common across UiB, while questions related to your specific position, department, and day-to-day work are handled by the relevant faculty and local HR team.
Incoming international staff
We support incoming international employees with general questions related to moving to Bergen and settling in at the University of Bergen. This includes topics such as immigration and registration, electronic ID, taxation, social security, insurance, banking, and accompanying family members.
In addition, we offer onboarding seminars, tax seminars, social activities, and an online information hub with practical guidance and resources for international employees.
Outgoing researchers
We support researchers who are planning a research stay abroad. To help you prepare, we have developed a 10-step guide covering key stages of the process, including timelines, financial planning, tax and social security considerations, safety abroad, travelling with family members, and other practical matters.
Secondary position
If you're starting a secondary position at UiB, we offer an initial online meeting with the International Centre to discuss relevant tax, social security, and reporting requirements. We recommend inviting your local HR contact to this meeting to ensure that any employment-related matters are addressed from the start.
Guests
UiB hosts a wide range of international guests, and the support available may vary depending on the type of guest, the purpose of the visit and the host department. More information about the different guest categories can be found on our guest information pages.
For incoming international guests, we provide information and guidance on topics such as immigration requirements, taxation, accompanying family members, and other practical matters related to living and staying in Norway. Our webpages contain detailed information and useful resources to help guests prepare for their stay at UiB and in Bergen.
Your first year at UiB
As part of our central onboarding programme, we offer a three-step introduction to help international employees get settled at UiB:
- Pre-arrival essentials: Immigration, registration and tax (30-minute online seminar, offered every other week)
- Online self-onboarding: E-learning course available through Mitt UiB
- Orientation seminar: In-person seminar held at Nygårdsgaten 5 in Bergen
During your first year at UiB, you will also be invited to a range of social events and networking opportunities. Please keep an eye on your UiB email for invitations and updates.
Once you have received your UiB account, you will also gain access to the UiB International HR Hub (external link), where you can find practical information and useful resources to help you settle in and make the most of your first months in Bergen.
