About the research direction

Quantum Information Science (QIS) is an interdisciplinary field focused on how information can be encoded, processed, transmitted, and measured using the principles of quantum mechanics. Concepts such as superposition, entanglement, and quantum measurement open up new possibilities beyond classical technologies.

By combining quantum physics, computer science, information theory, and engineering, QIS enables new approaches to computing, communication, and sensing that can significantly outperform classical systems in specific applications. The aim is to contribute to a more secure and technologically advanced future in the age of quantum computing.

Within this research direction, the Department of Informatics and the Norwegian National Security Authority (NSM) will continue and extend their long history of collaborating on information and cyber security. Research focus areas include: Quantum Information Theory (QIT), Quantum computing for practical applications, Quantum Error Correction Codes (QECCs), and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC). 

Relevant application areas for the research conducted at Quantum UiB include cyber security, post-quantum cryptograph, quantum algorithms and error correction, and quantum communication.
