Course: Useful Photochemical Transformations
This is a PhD-level course in photochemistry provided by ChemSchool. ChemSchool is financed by the Research Council of Norway and coordinated by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bergen.

After an overview of basic photophysical concepts and a survey of equipment used to perform photochemistry, the focus will be on light-induced chemical reactions that are quite general and have proved to be synthetically useful. Most attention will be paid to the reactivity of alkenes, carbonyl compounds, aromatics, halides and nitrites, oxidation, reduction and substitution reactions, and transformations involving pericyclic reactions, chlorine, and singlet oxygen. The final topic will be photolabile protecting groups.
The curriculum will be material covered by seven (or eight) Teams lectures, selected publications, and a compilation of subchapters from standard textbooks in photochemistry.
Lectures will be given November 9th, 11th, 16th, 18th, 23rd, 25th, 30th (and December 2nd) at 10:15 - 12:00 with a break in the middle.
A written exam (1.5 hours) will be held on December 14th.
The course carries 5 ECTS.
Both the course and the examination may be completed remotely. We will organize the examination at your home university, meaning you will not need to travel to Bergen.
