Course description
Objectives and Content
In this course, students will immerse themselves in a themed project in digital culture, leading to a self-chosen assignment (bachelor thesis) created through practice-based research. The research question and background literature are chosen by the student in consultation with the teacher, and the suggested practical methods are covered during class.
The semester project must be a substantial, complete and functioning practice-based work. It also includes a written dissertation that places the work in its larger academic framework and explains the methods used. A practical project can for example be a digital work of art, a critical game, a web design project, an experimental platform, a work of electronic literature, etc.
The assignment gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the area that interests them most in creative and practice-based digital culture aesthetics.
Training is provided in rules and norms for academic thesis writing.

Teaching and learning methods
The teaching is generally discussion-based and it is expected that the students take an active part in discussions in the classroom, and in presentations in electronic forums that are part of the teaching program. Limited technological help will also be given, but it is assumed that students taking this class will come with practical skills from previous classes.
All students must present their own assignment during the semester and give feedback to fellow students about their assignment.
Each student will receive advising sessions where the student meets a supervisor about their own project. This will be held either individually or in a group setting.
If fewer than five students register for the course, the department may introduce reduced teaching, cf. the department's guidelines for this at Mitt UiB. In that case, students will receive information about it before the semester registration deadline.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Attendance and participation are mandatory. Course participation is approved by the course coordinator. If the absence exceeds 25%, the student cannot take the exam.
There are three mandatory assignments in the form of a one-page outline of the project idea, a prototype of the practical project, and a full draft of the project and dissertation. The student must be prepared to discuss and present their project to the class at each of these stages. The obligatory assignments must be approved by the course responsible.
Guidance is obligatory in the form of two short advising sessions where the student meets a supervisor about their own project. The first meeting takes place at the start of the project. The last meeting will take place in connection with the submission of the last draft.
The mandatory assignments are valid in the teaching semester.
