Course description
Objectives and Content
NOR-UVID1 is a course between the beginner and intermediate levels, and it is partially based on NOR-U1.
The target audience is individuals who need or wish to be extra well-prepared for NOR-U2 and/or wish a slower progression through UiB's Norwegian courses.
The course focuses on topics and vocabulary dealing with studies, student and working life, as well as texts related to Norwegian culture. Key parts of Norwegian morphology, syntax, and pronunciation will be covered. Additionally, there will be conversation, discussion, and written production on topics covered in the course, and students may also make short presentations on self-chosen topics.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
The student should be able to read, speak, and write about the topics covered in the course.
Skills
The student should:
- Be able to understand normal spoken Norwegian on general topics and topics related to study and working life.
- Be able to discuss and hold conversations in Norwegian on the same topics with good pronunciation, based on the vocabulary provided by the course.
- Be able to use the grammatical structures that have been covered in the course.
General Competence
The student should:
- Have acquired an active vocabulary of approximately 1200 words and a somewhat larger passive vocabulary.
- Be able to recognize words and phrases they have seen or heard before and partly understand the meaning of a word based on their knowledge of Norwegian morphology.

Required Previous Knowledge
To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Have completed NOR-INTRO within the last three semesters; or
- Have been admitted to NOR-U1 within the previous three semesters and have:
- Submitted and received approval for at least three assignments; and
- Attended at least 36 hours of classes.

Access to the Course
Teaching and learning methods
The course has approximately 36 teaching hours.
It is expected that students are prepared and participate actively in lessons.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Attendance is mandatory. Students who are absent more than 25% of the time will not be permitted to take the exam.
During the semester, students must submit and get approved at least three assignments.
The course teacher approves the assignments and attendance.
Both the assignments and attendance must be approved in the same semester.
The compulsory requirements are valid for three semesters. This includes the semester when the lectures are given and the following two semesters.
Forms of Assessment
The course concludes with a written examination in Norwegian Bokmål.
The exam is a three hour, digital, on-campus exam covering listening tests, reading and writing skills.
Students may only sit for the exam once per semester.
As a general rule, students cannot sit for an exam more than three times. The number of examination attempts is regulated by forskrift om studium ved UiB § 8-1 (UiB's regulations on admissions i.a.).
