Learning Outcomes
Knowledge
The student will be able to explain:
- the concepts of the subject.
- pre- and paraclinical disciplines included in the study relevant to the subject periodontology.
- the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases on a macroscopic, microscopic and molecular biological level.
- the interaction between general health, systemic factors/ disease and periodontal disease and how treatment of periodontal disease is conducted in patients with various medical conditions.
- epidemiology of periodontal disease and the importance of periodontal health for the population`s general health as well as the classification of periodontal disease.
- periodontal diagnosis, treatment planning, prevention, treatment and prognosis assessment.
- pathogenesis, diagnostics, prevention and treatment with dental implants.
- the use of antimicrobial agents in periodontal therapy.
- social security benefits associated with periodontal treatment.
Skills
The student will be able to:
- Display good skills in clinical periodontics to diagnose disease, assess treatment needs, plan periodontal therapy and assess prognosis after treatment.
- Communicate with patients about periodontal diseases, the causes and natural history, raise awareness and motivate patients to improve oral health as well as instruct them in the use of necessary remedies.
- Perform supra- and subgingival scaling by using manual and mechanical devices.
- Display clinical skills in non-surgical treatment of mild and moderate forms of periodontal disease.
- Display clinical skills in prevention and treatment of mild disease in peri-implant tissues.
- Assess the medical risk factors of periodontal treatment in patients with systemic diseases and conditions and be able to distinguish cases that should be referred for specialist treatment.
- Have the competence to evaluate the outcome of periodontal treatment, conduct risk assessments, facilitate and carry out periodontal maintenance therapy.
- Communicate with specialists in periodontics and other healthcare professionals when treating difficult cases.
General competence
The course shall make the student aware of her/his attitudes to the subject so that when she/he is a qualified dentist she/he will cooperate well with colleagues and at all times carry out proper treatment both according to the subject's scientific development and health care ethics.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Approved clinical course in OD3PERIO is a prerequisite to sit the exam. All parts of the instruction are mandatory aside from the lectures.
The student is responsible for reporting absences, and unexcused absences are not allowed. In addition to the attendance requirements, the academic requirements must be met, both in terms of the quality of the work and sufficient practice.
In this subject, mandatory activities are valid for two semesters.
It is not permitted to have more than two attempts at mandatory teaching in this subject.
