Arts and Humanities Library

The Arts and Humanities Library is affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and is located at Haakon Sheteligs plass 7. The library has collections in language, literature, philosophy, history, art history, cultural studies and archaeology.

Find your way around the library

The library is spread over six floors.

Shelf overview

The books are arranged according to the Dewey system:

  • 1st floor – Literary studies (Dewey 800–899) and History and geography (Dewey 900–999)
  • 2nd floor – Linguistics (Dewey 400–499) and Art history and Theatre studies (700–799)
  • 3rd floor – Philosophy (100–199), Religious studies (Dewey 200–299), Social sciences (300–399)
  • 4th floor – Fiction (foreign) (the S shelves), Reference, information and IT (Dewey 000–099), Older texts (the H class), Master's theses
  • 5th floor – Fiction (the S shelves)
  • Lower ground floor – Journals

Borrowing and returns

Self-service loan machines and a return machine are available in the library. Books can also be returned in a hatch by the main entrance. Reserved material is collected from the pickup shelf. You receive a pickup code by SMS or email.

Older material and special collections are kept in closed stacks. Order via Oria – the material is normally ready for collection within 1–2 working days.

Workspaces and group rooms

Lower ground floor: Seating areas and a teaching room that can be used as a workspace when free.

1st floor:
Babelstuen – an open area with informal seating.
Individual workspaces for focused work.
Two group rooms with space for four people; these can be booked for two hours. See the notice with the booking form outside the room.

2nd floor, mezzanine:
Left mezzanine: Seating areas for collaboration, and sofa booths for focused work.
Right mezzanine: Individual workspaces for focused work, sofa booths and high tables with bar stools.
Two group rooms with space for four people; these can be booked for two hours. See the notice with the booking form outside the room.

The Book Tower:
1st floor: Teaching room that can be used as a workspace when free.
2nd–5th floor: Individual workspaces for focused work (quiet zone).

Printing, copying and scanning

Printers for printing, copying and scanning are available on all floors except the 3rd floor.
