What is a crystal?

People have always been fascinated by gleaming crystals, by their colours and shapes. They were often seen as magical, with their pure, geometric forms.

The word crystal comes from the Greek word for ice. People once believed that crystals were a form of petrified ice. Today we know that crystals are minerals that grow.

But how do crystals form? Why do some grow enormous while others stay tiny? And are they simply pleasing to look at?
