Jeg har doktorgrad i molekylærbiologi fra Universitetet i Bergen i 2001. Jeg har lang forskningserfaring innen miljøtoksikologi, med spesialkompetanse i å anvende genomikk-baserte metoder. I min første postdoc ved NTNU (2001-2004) fikk jeg kompetanse innen funksjonell genomikk-baserte forskningsmetoder som for eksempel DNA mikroarray. Videre jobbet jeg som forker innen genomikk og toksikogenomikk ved Michael Sars Senter for Marin molekylærbiologi ved bruk av modellorganismen Oikopleura.
Siden doktorgrad arbeidet om miljøtoksikologi, mine hoved forsknings interesser har vært å studere hvordan miljøkjemikalier påvirker marine organismer, hovedsakelig ved bruk av fisk som modellorganismer. I over ti år som forsker (siden 2009) i Miljøtoksikologi gruppen (BIO, Universitetet i Bergen) har jeg gjort stor innsatts i å utvikle og bruke toksikogenomikk/omics-baserte metoder (hovedsakelig transkriptomikk) for å studere effekter av miljøkjemikalier mest i torsk (i prosjekter som iCod1, iCod2.0 og dCod1.0), samt andre fiskearter og Calanus (Nansen Legacy-prosjektet). Forsknings arbeidet omfatter for eksempel undersøkelse av effekter og virknings mekanismer samt utvikling av biomarkører for miljøgifter som hormonforstyrrende stoffer, metylkvikksølv, persistente organiske miljøgifter, «emerging contaminants» og petroleum forbindelser.
