Eg arbeidar i forskningsgruppa for infeksjonssjukdommar og mikrobiologi ved Universitetet i Bergen og Haukeland Universitetssjukehus. Sidan 2020 har eg jobba ein del med koronainfeksjon, særeleg langtidsplagar etter COVID, og publisert rundt 25 artiklar om dette, inkluder artikkelen Long COVID in a prospective cohort of home-isolated patients (Blomberg et al, Nat Med 2021, 27:1607-1613) som har blitt sitert over 600 ganger og lastet bed 171 000 ganger, og fekk prisen for "årets artikkel" både av norsk infeksjonsmedisinsk forening og av Medisinsk faktultet ved Universitetet i Bergen. 

Eg tok doktorgraden med forskning i Tanzania på antibiotikaresistens ved alvorlege infeksjonar, og dokumenterte da for første gang stor forekomst og høg dødelegheit ved blodbaneinfeksjonar forårsaka av multiresistente ESBL (extended-spectrum beta-lactamase) produserande bakteriar. Seinare har vi gjort ei rekke fleire studiar om antibiotikaresistens, i Tanzania, inkludert Zanzibar, og i India. Eg har vore med å planlegge og gjennomføre to randomiserte utprøvingar relatert til antibiotikaresistens; COTRIMRESIST (clinicaltrials.gov ID NCT03087890) om forebyggande antibiotikabruk og antibiotikaresistens blant HIV-pasientar i Tanzania, og PRORIDE (clinicaltrials.gov ID NCT04172012) ein studie på om probiotika til nyfødte barn kan bedre overlevelse, redusere sjukehusinnleggelse, og forebygge bærerskap av resistente bakteriar. 

Eg har tidlegare arbeida for WHO med forskning og promotering av 4-medikament fixed-dose combinations-tablettar for å motverke utvikling av resistens i tuberkulose. 

I tillegg forskar eg på fleire andre sjukdommar, inkludert ebola, malaria, tuberkulose m.m.

For statistikk og datahåndtering er eg ein entusiastisk brukar av R.

Indremedisin, infeksjonssykdommer, fokus på global helse / tropemedisin, inkl. HIV, tuberkulose, malaria, ebola m.m. Underviser på internasjonalt tropemedisinkurs ved CMC, Vellore, India.

I teach medical students at the University of Bergen since 2008. In 2018 I received the final year students' price for best teacher at medical studies. Apart from that I have been teaching at the international short course in clinical tropical medicine at Christian Medical College, Vellore, India, since its start in 2007,  and for a five-years period at the Union's international tuberculosis course in Arusha, Tanzania (www.theunion.org). 

I teach various topics in internal medicine and infectious diseases, global health and tropical medicine, including antimicrobial resistance, sepsis, malaria, ebola, tuberculosis
