About the research direction
This research direction aims to deliver breakthroughs in biomedical diagnostics and quantum-enabled instrumentation by harnessing the potential of quantum sensing and nitrogen-vacancy centres (NVs) in diamonds.
Quantum sensing leverages quantum properties to achieve unprecedented sensitivity in measuring physical, chemical, and biological parameters. NVs in diamond are a powerful platform, offering atomic-level quantum coherence in a solid-state material that can be operated at room temperature enabling precise detection of magnetic and electric fields, temperature, pH, and strain. Since 2019, researchers at the Department of Physics and Technology at UiB have established a unique expertise in quantum sensing with NVs, pioneering the use of this technology for nucleic acid detection and laying the foundation for quantum sensing research at Quantum UiB.
Research focus areas include: Quantum Based Cancer Diagnostics, Quantum Sensing of Proton Induced Cellular Damage, Quantum Sensing at Nanoscale (QNano).
Relevant application areas for the research conducted at Quantum UiB include diamond-based technologies, nanoscale sensing for life sciences and health care, cancer diagnostics and proton therapy related research, as well as navigation in GPS-denied environments.
