About the research direction
Research in quantum physics has a long history at the University of Bergen dating back to early collaborations with strongholds of quantum mechanics through J. Hansteen. More recent activity includes, among others, studies of laser-atom interactions and the behaviour of quantum dots.
A strong theoretical foundation for describing quantum dynamics is essential not only for advancing fundamental research in quantum many-body physics, but also for realizing practical quantum technology for optimization, computation, and sensing. To push the frontiers of quantum dynamics, the research direction on quantum simulations and quantum optimization will therefore bring together experts in quantum field theory, optimization, and machine learning.
Research focus areas include: Simulation of strongly correlated quantum systems, Theory of diamond impurities and quantum sensing, and Quantum optimization.
Relevant application areas for the research conducted at Quantum UiB include quantum-inspired methods for complex systems, combinatorial optimization for energy networks, logistics, and finance, as well as Artificial Intelligence.
