Difference and Power in Education (FoMU)
The research group Difference and Power in Education (FoMU) critically interrogates how difference is constructed (historically, politically, materially and socially) and how positions of dominance are secured and normalized. To do this, we engage in research that explores issues of difference, inclusion, exclusion, and power, and how these intersect with educational systems, policies, and practices. Thus, we investigate and critique education as a social institution that can replicate or magnify social inequalities. By interrogating difference and power, the research group aims to contribute to academic discourse and public discussion about the role of education in society. An important purpose for the group is to highlight both how education systems produce inequitable opportunities for participation and to consider how education can be a site of resistance, liberation and justice.
About the research group
WHO WE ARE
Researchers in FoMU come from several disciplinary backgrounds including education, cultural studies, psychology, women & gender studies, linguistics and public health. FOMU researchers engage in interdisciplinary research and collaborate with scholars outside of education. Further information about FOMU research can be found on individual members’ research profiles.
METHODOLOGICAL ORIENTATIONS
FoMU researchers use critical perspectives in both theory and methodology, mainly applying qualitative methods. Working from a critical perspective entails a reflexive approach to our research, considering how difference and power affect our own theoretical perspectives, viewpoints and interests, and our positioning as researchers.
WORKING WITH FOMU
We welcome inquiries from researchers and students who have questions about our research backgrounds, are interested in collaboration, or who may wish to participate in FoMU. Please contact the research group leader.
