The Millennium Development Goal no 4 is aiming at lowering by two thirds the child mortality globally. Research can still improve our "know-how" on how to do it.
In Uganda, malnutrition and HIV/AIDS remain serious challenges. Almost 40% of children are stunted, and 6 % of pregnant women are HIV infected, while a third of their children acquire HIV perinatally. In order to address these challenges, there is need for innovative and evidence-based interventions, which unfortunately, remain elusive. There is also a serious shortage of sufficiently qualified staff to carry out graduate training and quality research.
Three main areas will be studied, with the overriding theme: How can we improve the health care provided in order to maximise its benefit? One of the projects are continued from last period and two are new:
1. Effect of multiple micronutrient supplementation on growth, morbidity and mortality among HIV infected children in Uganda: A randomised double blind placebo-controlled study
2. Facility-based intervention to increase male involvement in antenatal care and the prevention programme of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
3. Peer support to improve child health
