The KLAR study
One in three women experiences significant health issues during menopause. Therefore there is a pressing need for increased knowledge about how menopause affects women's sick leave and withdrawal from the workforce.
About the research project
Every year, more than 27,000 Norwegian women enter menopause. Around one-third experience health issues that affect both quality of life and working life, yet the topic is still marked by silence and a lack of knowledge. Many women risk dropping out of the workforce at an age when their experience, commitment, and competence are actually at their strongest.
The KLAR study at the University of Bergen examines how menopause affects women’s health, sickness absence, and participation in working life. The goal is to provide better knowledge, health services, and working conditions for women in this stage of life – and to break down the stigma surrounding menopause. The project builds on the Women’s Health Committee’s report “The Great Difference” (NOU 2023:5) and is led by the research group for work, health, and gender. In addition to the University of Bergen, the collaboration includes the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, NORCE, Lancaster University in the UK, and Roskilde University in Denmark. Municipalities, as well as general practitioners and gynecologists, are also participating in the project.
