Semester dates

The academic year at UiB is a total of 40 weeks and divided into two semesters.

Each semester the University of Bergen offers a Welcome Programme for all new international students.

Autumn semester

Autumn semester overview
  • Lasts approximately 19 weeks
  • Starts in  week 32  (mid-August)
  • Ends on 20 December 

The date for when your lectures start will vary each semester.  Contact your faculty for more details. 

Important dates in the autumn semester 2026
  • Beginning of August (week 32): The Welcome programme for international students will be published in May/June.  
  • 1  September: Deadline to register for courses and exams in Studentweb.
  • November-December: Examsare held throughout the semester, but most of them will be held during this period. Please check each course page for more details.
  • 20 December: Official end of the autumn semester. 

Public Holidays: There are several  public holidays  throughout the year in Norway.

Spring semester

Spring semester overview
  • Lasts 21 weeks
  • Starts normally in week 1 or 2 (early in January)
  • Ends on the 20 June

  • Starting 6 January: Welcome programme for international students.
  • 1 February: Deadline to register for courses and exams in Studentweb.
  • May - June: Exams are held  throughout the semester, but most of them will be held during this period.  Please check each course page for more details.
  • 20 June: Official end of the spring semester.

Public Holidays: There are several  public holidays  throughout the year in Norway.
