Objectives and Content

SPLA207 is an advanced course in Spanish phonetics and grammar with a focus on Spanish in Latin America.

Required Previous Knowledge
No formal requirements, but all teaching is in Spanish and is based on knowledge of Spanish corresponding to the courses at the 100-level in Spanish language and Latin American studies.
Recommended Previous Knowledge
SPLA207 is based on knowledge of Spanish corresponding to the spring courses at the 100-level in Spanish language and Latin American studies. It is an advantage to also have completed SPLA107 and SPLA117. As all teaching is in Spanish, we recommend a Spanish level of at least B1 on the CEFR-scale.

Access to the Course
The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen.
Teaching and learning methods

The classes are a combination of lecture and seminar, and are held for two sessions a week for eight weeks. Instruction is shared with SPLA257.

If fewer than five students register for a course, instruction will be tailored to the number of students.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Students must attend at least 70% of the classes in order to be allowed to take the final course assessment.

There is one mandatory assignment on selected topics from the course. This must be completed within the time-limit given. There will be more information about the assignment and deadlines at the beginning of the semester. The assignment is assessed as approved or not approved.

In accordance with UiB's degree and study regulations, students are entitled to a new attempt at the assignment if it was not approved when first submitted. The assignment must be approved before the student can take the final assessment in the course. The mandatory course assignments are valid for one semester after the semester the course was taken.

Forms of Assessment
The form of assessment is a 5 hour written exam in Spanish. Both contents and language are assessed.

Assessment Semester
Spring. There will also be given an assessment early in the fall semester for students with valid compulsory course work.
Reading List

The required course reading is primarily a grammar reference book.

The syllabus will be available by December 1 for the spring semester.

Course Evaluation
The teaching will be evaluated according to the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen.
Examination Support Material
Students may use monolingual and bilingual (for example Norwegian-Spanish/Spanish-Norwegian) dictionaries approved by the Department during the exam. The students must bring their own dictionary to the exam and be aware of and follow the rules regarding dictionary use on exams.
