Course description

Objectives and Content

The course consists of an introduction to Spanish syntax, as well as a specialization in Spanish grammar and working on written tasks. The course builds on SPLA107/SPLA627.

The student should

•have detailed academic and practical knowledge of sentence structure and Spanish grammar.

•has a good knowledge of how to write a complete academic text in Spanish.

Skills

The student should:

  • demonstrate a clear understanding of the Spanish language system and be able to write complete academic texts in Spanish.
  • be able to develop this academic knowledge further.

General competence

The student should:

  • be able to analyze academic texts and draw their own conclusions.
  • be able to further extend his or her knowledge, skills, and understanding through continued studies or employment.

Required Previous Knowledge
No formal requirement, but all teaching is in Spanish, and demands a solid command of the language.
Recommended Previous Knowledge
It is advantageous to have completed one of the courses SPLA107 Spanish Grammar I or SPLA627 Spanish Grammar I (online), and we do recommend to complete the courses in a chronological order.

Access to the Course
The course is open to students with admission to UiB Videre.
Teaching and learning methods

The teaching normally runs over a period of 10 weeks. It may also be relevant to intensify the teaching and schedule for blocks. Normally there will be two sessions a week. Key parts of the curriculum are taught in these sessions. Student-active forms of learning are emphasized, and throughout the semester there will be a great focus on self-activity. It is expected that the students prepare thoroughly for the lessons and carry out follow-up work and problem solving.

If fewer than five students register for a course, the teaching offered can be adapted to the number of students. In that case, information will be given at the beginning of the semester.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

There are three obligatory assignments on selected topics from the reading list. These assignments must be completed by the given deadline. More information about the types of assignment, assessment criteria and deadlines is given at the beginning of the semester.The assignments are assessed as a pass/fail. In accordance with the University of Bergen's Regulations for Degrees and Studies, the students have the right to a second try for each assignment, if one or more of the first hand-ins were not passed. All the assignments must be approved before the student can complete the final assessment in the course.

The compulsory assignments are valid for one semester after the teaching semester.

Forms of Assessment
The form of assessment is a 5-hour school exam in Spanish. Both use of language and content will be evaluated.
Grading Scale
The exam is marked in the grade scale A-F, where F is a fail.
Assessment Semester
Autumn. There will also be given an assessment early in the spring semester for students with valid compulsory assignments.
Reading List
The reading list will be published no later than 1 July.
Course Evaluation
The teaching is evaluated in accordance with the quality control system of the University of Bergen.
Examination Support Material
Students can use monolingual and bilingual dictionaries (e.g. Norwegian-Spanish/Spanish-Norwegian) on the day of the exam. Students must bring their own dictionaries to the exam.
Programme Committee
The Program Committee is responsible for the academic content and structure of the subject, as well as for the quality of the study program and all of its courses.
Course Administrator
