The University Library as a partner in research projects

The University Library supports, maintains and develops digital services related to research, the Library's collections and library services. We help researchers at the University of Bergen with digital project infrastructure and offer training in digital tools and methods. We support researchers throughout the whole process, from searching for literature and planning data collection to publishing and dissemination. The collaboration can take different forms.

From data to publication

The University Library supports researchers at the University of Bergen in developing digital research infrastructure and provides access to publishing services at the University of Bergen. We help you find good solutions for how data and results can be managed, shared and published.

If you want to develop research infrastructure or explore publishing options for your dataset, we recommend an early dialogue with us. Together we can plan how your data should be handled throughout your project, and how it can best be preserved and made available after the project has ended.

Feel free to contact the group leader for digital infrastructures and research data to discuss the technical options available and how the University Library can contribute as a collaborative partner.

Areas of work

Infrastructure and research projects

At the University Library you gain a collaborative partner with experience from a range of infrastructure projects and close cooperation with researchers at the University of Bergen.

If you would like to involve us in a project, we recommend that you get in touch early in the application process to strengthen the project right from the start.

Examples of projects and infrastructures:

Technical and academic support for researchers and PhD candidates

At the University Library you gain access to digital services and infrastructure that support your research. We maintain and further develop text archives, publishing solutions and digital tools that make it easier for you to work with, share and communicate research.

We also offer advice and guidance on managing and making research data available. The University of Bergen has as a goal that data resulting from research activity is prepared and made available for reuse in line with the FAIR principles. Open access to research data contributes to greater visibility, transparency and reproducibility, and facilitates further use and new research. In this way the value and reach of your research project can be strengthened, while you receive recognition as a data creator through clear crediting.

Our services function as technical support system for researchers and PhD candidates throughout the research process.

Relevant services:

Publishing

The University Libray can provide advice on the choice of publication channel and support throughout the process of ensuring that your results are made openly accessible. We have agreements with a range of academic publishers on open access publishing, as well as a publication fund  that can cover open access publishing in other outlets. We also run a platform for open, researcher-led journals; Bergen Open Access Publishing.

Collections and digital exhibitions

At the University Library you gain access to unique collections, both digitally and in the Library's premises. We make the material available online and develop digital solutions that make it easier to explore and use the collections in research and communication.

In the special collections you will find rich and varied material: historical photographs, antiquarian documents, queer histories, a Nynorsk word bank and much more. You can explore all of this through our digital platform: Marcus.

Our material forms the basis for a range of exhibitions used in various projects. At the Library of Humanities we also have exhibition areas that welcome visitors directly in the foyer. If you use our collections in a project, we are happy to work with you to present the material in new ways in digital exhibitions, enhancing the visibility of both the work and the material and extending their longevity.

Digital exhibitions:

From searching to retrieval and metrics

The University Library has specialist expertise in literature searching, and can assist with searches across all disciplines, including systematic literature searches. We can provide guidance on the use of databases and search tools.

Following publication, it is important to ensure the widest possible dissemination and visibilty of your research results. We can advise on how to achieve this. In time, it may also be of interest to track how your research is being used and cited; in other reseach publications, patents, and policy documents. We can help with that.

Areas of work

Literature searching

We are well aquainted with the strengths and weaknesses of the various resources used for literature searching, and can support researchers in a range of ways. Please contact your library or request a guidance session. You can also keep an eye on the University Library's calendar for available courses. The Library of Medicine offers a dedicated service providing support for systematic reviews for PhD candidates and staff at the Faculty of Medicine, as well as staff at Helse Bergen.

Visibility and discoverability

Through your choice of title and keywords associated with your publications, as well as your choice of publication channel, you can enhance both the visibility and the discoverability of your results. The conscious use of researcher profiles also helps to make you as a researcher and your projects more visible. Read more and find links to relevant resources on our page about making research visible.

Research statistics and analysis

If, in addition to standard searches, you require the compilation and analysis of publications and research impact, or statistics on publishing following a research project, we can assist you. Read more about how we can contribute on our page on bibliometric services. Please note that planning and carrying out bibliometric analyses takes time, so do get in touch well in advance so that we can agree together on how to proceed.
