Advancing Precision Medicine for Diabetes 

Diabetes is not a single disease. Behind the common diagnosis lie multiple biological pathways, genetic factors and disease mechanisms that influence how diabetes develops, progresses and responds to treatment. The Mohn Research Center for Diabetes Precision Medicine (PRECISE-DIA) is a joint research center between the University of Bergen and the Haukeland University hospital (Helse Bergen), funded by the Trond Mohn Research Foundation (external link). It brings together clinicians, geneticists, molecular biologists, bioinformaticians and epidemiologists to uncover this complexity and translate new knowledge into better care for patients. 

Our Research Questions 

PRECISE-DIA seeks to answer some of the most important questions in diabetes research: 

  • Why do individuals develop different forms of diabetes? 
  • How can genetic, molecular and clinical data be used to improve diagnosis? 
  • Which biological mechanisms drive disease progression and complications? 
  • How can treatments be tailored to the characteristics of each patient? 
  • Can we identify diabetes risk earlier and intervene before disease develops? 

To address these questions, the center integrates data and biological samples from large national registries, biobanks and clinical cohorts, creating a unique foundation for discovering new disease mechanisms and patient subgroups. 

A Unique Combination of Expertise 

The center unites more than 30 researchers with expertise spanning clinical diabetes research, genetics, cell biology, bioinformatics and data science. By combining laboratory studies with advanced analysis of population-scale health data, PRECISE-DIA bridges fundamental biological research and clinical medicine. This multidisciplinary approach allows the center to investigate diabetes across the entire life course—from fetal development and childhood to adulthood and ageing.  

PRECISE-DIA also collaborates closely with leading research groups across the Nordic countries, Europe and the United States, ensuring access to cutting-edge technologies, international expertise and large comparative datasets. 

Delivering Impact for Patients and Society 

The ultimate goal of PRECISE-DIA is to transform diabetes care through precision medicine. By developing a more biologically informed classification of diabetes, the center aims to replace one-size-fits-all approaches with diagnostic tools and treatments tailored to individual patients.
