About the research group

Usage-based approaches to second language acquisition (SLA) and teaching are now advancing in international second language research. Central tenets in usage-based approaches are: Linguistic knowledge emerges from experiences with language in usage-events; language learning is the learning of constructions (form-meaning mappings); language learning is exemplar-based; frequency in input affects the learning process, language learning is a dynamic developmental process; implicit associative learning also applies to adult learners.

The members of the research group have a common interest in studying second language learning and teaching, and also multilingualism, from the perspective of usage-based linguistics. The core members of the group are faculty from the fields of Norwegian as a second language and Nordic linguistics at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies. In addition, the group is open for graduate students working on relevant projects, and external members with an interest for the research field. We have for instance established a collaboration with Bergen Læringssenter for Norwegian and social studies, and with NAV Bergenhus.
