About the research group

Both nationally and internationally, access to and management of the environment and natural resources are crucial for economic and social development. Environmental degradation, resource scarcity, and climate change threaten biodiversity and, consequently, the foundation for human livelihoods, both locally and globally. The development of legal structures that ensure sustainable management of the environment and natural resources is therefore essential to provide sufficient food, water, and energy for the world’s population.

The research group addresses these challenges by studying access to and protection of natural resources and the environment, the legal frameworks for natural resource management, and environmental governance as a prerequisite for economic and social development. The group’s perspective combines national and international legal sources and seeks solutions that promote sustainable development.

The cross-sectional nature of the field makes interdisciplinary collaboration important for the research group. In this context, partnerships have been establisged with several external actors, including Bergen Offshore Wind Centre (BOW)Bergen Energy Lab (BEL)The Aberdeen University Centre for Energy Law (AUCEL) (external link) and Tina Soliman Hunter (external link), Professor at Macquarie Law School in Sydney.
