Objectives and content

Objectives The integrated master's program in dentistry is a professional study program leading to the university degree Master in Dentistry. The program aims to produce broadly competent general practitioners who can take responsibility for oral health from a holistic perspective. It also provides the foundation for lifelong learning, specialization, and research education. The program ensures that society has candidates with the knowledge, skills, and general competence necessary for the responsible practice of dentistry. The teaching is research-based, professionally updated, and adapted to society's and the population's needs for preventing and treating oral diseases and conditions. The program provides a basis for further updating, learning, and education in professional practice by giving students knowledge and understanding of research processes relevant to the field.

Content The integrated master's program in dentistry includes biological basic subjects (1st and 2nd year), paraclinical subjects (2nd-5th year), and clinical subjects (3rd-5th year). The program provides a good foundation for starting a career as a general practitioner, researcher, or specialist in a clinical subject.

Required Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the integrated master's degree in dentistry, the candidate has acquired broad biological and dental basic competence. This basic competence consists of theoretical knowledge in biomedical, paraclinical, clinical, and behavioral disciplines, as well as clinical skills and general health competence. Upon completing the program, the candidate has the following learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Knowledge

  • The candidate has a scientific mindset and attitude.
  • The candidate can explain, analyze, understand, and apply relevant knowledge in biomedical, paraclinical, clinical, and behavioral disciplines and subjects.

Skills

  • The candidate can independently, based on theoretical and clinical competence, prevent, examine, diagnose, treat, and follow up patients with oral diseases/conditions in general practice.
  • The candidate can communicate well with different patient categories.
  • The candidate can critically assess their own practice.

General Competence

  • The candidate has adequate ethical and professional attitudes.
  • The candidate shows empathy and respect in treatment situations.
  • The candidate has good collaboration skills with other healthcare professionals.
  • The candidate has good attitudes towards quality and precision.
  • The candidate recognizes the need for maintaining and updating knowledge and skills throughout their career. The candidate can contribute to research projects related to oral health and assess oral health in relation to societal conditions.

Admission Requirements

General university admission certification and MEROD: Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) and Physics 1 and Chemistry 1 and 2.

Introductory Courses

Examen Philosophicum, 10 credits

Compulsory units

All courses in the master's program in dentistry are mandatory.

Specialisation

The program is a professional study. All courses beyond Examen Philosophicum are considered specialization.

Recommended electives

There are no elective courses in the program. Students write an integrated master's thesis on a self-chosen topic.

Sequential Requirements, courses

Courses must be completed in a set sequence. It is not possible to change the education plan or the sequence of exams without prior approval. See the faculty's supplementary rules to § 2-2 (2), § 7-3 (2), and § 8-2 (3) in UiB's study regulations. If a student lacks a passing result in a course after the regular exam and the corresponding re-exam, the student will be moved down to the cohort below. This also applies if the student has valid absence from one or both exams.

EXPHIL is mandatory but exempt from the sequence requirement. Courses DIGI100 and DIGI101 must be completed in the first year.

Students who are moved down to a lower cohort due to lack of study progression are strongly advised to follow the teaching again according to the study plan of their new cohort, even if these courses have been passed earlier. This is particularly important for courses that include skill training, clinical teaching, or practical teaching. It is crucial that the student maintains practical and clinical skills for further study progression. The student should contact the course responsible in the individual courses to agree on which elements should be repeated.

According to the Faculty of Medicine's supplementary regulations § 8-1 (3a), it is not permitted to have more than two attempts in courses that include practice or have practice as an assessment form. For the integrated master's program in dentistry, this applies to the following courses: OD1INTRO, OD2KARIO, OD2PERIO, OD2RØNT, OD3KJEVE, OD3KLIFORB, OD3ENDO, OD3KARIO, OD3PERIO, OD3PROT, OD3RØNT, OD4BARN1, OD4BARN2, OD4DIAGNOS, OD4ENDO, OD4KJEVE, OD4KLIN, OD4KOS, OD4PROT, OD5PRAKSIS, OD5KLIN1, OD5KLIN2, and OD5KOS.

Study period abroad

The exchange is adapted to the final part of the professional study, where students work relatively independently in clinical service. The exchange takes place in the 9th semester. Relevant institutions with exchange agreements:

Umeå University, University of Gothenburg, University of Dundee, Université Paris Descartes, Aarhus University, European University Cyprus.

Teaching methods

In teaching, we emphasize using teaching methods with a lot of student activity. Among other things, we use more interdisciplinary teaching methods and try to achieve integration of the academic depth. The teaching is both theoretical (lectures and seminars) and practical (work in laboratories and clinics). Before you can take an exam in a subject or a teaching block, the practical work in the relevant discipline must be approved.

Teaching and learning methods

The program is a professional study that involves patient treatment. Therefore, high demands are placed on knowledge, skills, and general competence. In teaching, we emphasize using many different and varied teaching methods with a lot of student activity. Among other things, e-learning and interdisciplinary teaching are used to achieve academic integration. The program uses a wide range of teaching methods:

  • Lectures
  • Demonstrations
  • Laboratory courses
  • Practical teaching (communication)
  • Skills courses
  • Clinical training on simulators
  • Practice studies
  • Clinical teaching/patient treatment in the university clinic and collaborating health institutions
  • Interprofessional collaborative learning (TVEPS)
  • Individual supervision in project work

Assessment methods

To ensure that students/candidates have the necessary knowledge, skills, and general competence, a wide range of assessment methods are used throughout the study program:

  • Written mid-term tests
  • Practical/clinical tests
  • Assessment of practical and theoretical skills in skills courses
  • Assessment of knowledge and clinical skills in clinical practice
  • Assessment of presentation and report from the practice study
  • Written test as an assessment method
  • Written school exam
  • Assessment of project work

All exams must be answered in Norwegian, alternatively Swedish or Danish.

Diploma and Diploma supplement

A diploma is issued after the degree is completed. The diploma entitles the holder to apply to the Directorate of Health for authorization as a dentist.

Grading scale

Courses included are graded with either A-F or Pass/Fail.

Access to further studies

An integrated master's in dentistry provides the basis for applying for a PhD program. An integrated master's program in dentistry plus two years of practice provides the basis for applying for specialist education in dentistry.

Employability

Most dentists work in private practice or the public dental service. Some work in teaching, research, or administration.

Evaluation

The integrated master's program in dentistry is evaluated in accordance with the quality assurance guidelines at UiB.

Suitability and autorisation

As an educational institution, we assess whether the candidate is suitable to practice as a healthcare or social worker. The assessment includes both professional, pedagogical, and personal qualifications and takes place throughout the entire education - cf. Regulations on Suitability Assessment in Higher Education.

After completing the study, the candidate has the right to apply for authorization as a dentist. The Directorate of Health grants authorization after a comprehensive assessment.

Programme committee

The Program Committee for Dental Sciences is responsible for the academic content, structure of the study, and the quality of the study program.
