Mathematics Education
Mathematics education is the didactics of mathematics. It involves studying questions related to the learning and teaching of mathematics, for example: What is mathematics? How do we learn mathematics? What can teachers do to help pupils and students learn mathematics?
About the research group
Mathematics education as an independent research field includes:
- Analysis of mathematical activity and mathematical thinking
- Development of specific theories, e.g., for mathematization, problem-solving, and proof techniques
- Exploration of methods for conveying specific mathematical content
- Critical evaluation of specific content selection in relation to the overarching goals of teaching
- Research into the prerequisites for learning and into teaching and learning processes
- Development and evaluation of concrete teaching sequences, types of teaching sequences, and curricula
- Development of methods for planning, conducting, observing, and analyzing teaching sessions
- The history of mathematics didactics itself
Research in mathematics education related to teaching and learning will often include practice studies, such as observations and data collection from mathematics classes in schools. The aim of the research may, for example, be to describe and explain how certain ways of organizing teaching can promote some students' learning, or how certain forms of assessment can support (or hinder) learning.
In our research group, we are interested in:
- Inquiry-based work in mathematics at the upper secondary level
- How aspects of the history of mathematics can provide new approaches to learning mathematics
- Modeling, exploratory and creative mathematics, and the use of ICT in upper secondary school
- Teachers’ professional development
- The interaction between mathematics education theory and practice
