Statistics and Data Science
The group dates back to the early 1970s, with a traditional focus on time series and medical statistics. Today, the group conducts research in a wide range of areas, including biostatistics, computational statistics, statistical learning and data science, probability theory, and financial and insurance mathematics.
About the research group
The Statistics and Data Science group is one of the largest academic environments in statistics in Norway and conducts research across a wide range of areas. We collaborate with researchers at several other departments at the University of Bergen (UiB) and with a number of institutions both nationally and internationally. We also offer a comprehensive educational program in Statistics and Data Science, including a 5-year integrated Master's program in actuarial science and data analysis. See below for more details.
Education
We are responsible for the following study programs at the Department of Mathematics:
- Bachelor's in Statistics and Data Science (in norwegian)
- Master's in Statistics and Data Science
- Integrated Master's in Actuarial Science and Data Analysis (in norwegian)
Statistics is a field within mathematics that deals with the principles and methods for collecting and analyzing quantitative information. This involves using models and concepts from probability theory. Statistical methods are used to explore datasets to identify patterns, make forecasts, and estimate uncertainties. In recent times, with the availability of large amounts of data, many of these methods are closely linked to machine learning techniques. In today’s society, where data is constantly being generated and stored, there is a growing demand for statisticians. See more on the Department of Mathematics' career pages (in norwegian)
Actuarial science refers to the field that applies statistical and mathematical methods to solve problems in insurance and finance. As an actuary, you analyze risk and the financial impact of future events. UiB is one of only two institutions in Norway that grants actuarial qualifications. Feel free to visit our career page for Data Science in finance and insurance (in norwegian).
