Senteret er en ledende internasjonal institusjon og pioner innen dypvannsforskning. Vår forskning har som mål å øke forståelsen vår av geologisk utvikling, biologiske tilpasninger, artsmangfold og potensielle ressurser i det minst studerte miljøet på Jorden: dypvannet. Senteret består av forskere fra en rekke forskjellige disipliner som arbeider tett sammen for å forstå de komplekse dypvannsinnene.
Om forskningssenteret
Senter for dyphavsforskning ble grunnlagt i 2021 som et resultat av et sjenerøst bidrag fra Trond Mohn forskningsstiftelsen. Senteret bygger på ekspertisen fra det fremragende forskning i geobiologi (2007-2017) og det etterfølgende K. G. Jebsen Senter for dyphavsforskning (2017-2021).

Dyphavet forblir en av Jordens siste grenser, med store ukjente faktorer innen geodynamikk, økosystemer og biologisk potensial. Ved Senter for dyphavsforskning i Bergen, Norge, tilnærmer vi oss dyphavsforskning gjennom tverrfaglig samarbeid, og vi arbeider for å være en global leder innen banebrytende forskning og transformative oppdagelser.

Visjon & misjon
Vår visjon er å utvide grensene for vitenskapelig forståelse og fremme kunnskapen om dyphavets miljøer og deres geologiske og biologiske potensial.
Senter for dyphavsforskning er dedikert til å fremme kunnskap om dyphavets geologiske utvikling, biologiske tilpasninger, biodiversitet og potensielle mineralressurser. Vårt tverrfaglige team av forskere og teknikere jobber for å bedre forstå hvordan geologiske, kjemiske og biologiske prosesser samvirker i komplekse miljøer, som for eksempel havbunnens hydrotermale systemer. Vi bygger bro mellom grunnleggende forskning og praktiske anvendelser og kobler vitenskap, utdanning, teknologi og industri gjennom samarbeid med internasjonale universiteter og havobservasjonsnettverk, lokale og nasjonale undervannsindustrier, samt andre forskningsinstitusjoner.
Vår forskning er organisert i fem sammenknyttede, tverrfaglige grupper med et særlig fokus på Norskehavet og Arktis. Sammen har vi som mål å flytte grensene for dyphavsforskning og innovasjon.

Senter for Dyphavsforskning er en del av Institutt for Geovitenskap ved Universitetet i Bergen i tillegg til å være sterkt tilknyttet til Institutt for Biovitenskap. Senteret består av omtrent 15 forskere i professor-, førsteamanuensis- og forskerstillinger, 15 doktorgradsstudenter, 10 teknikere og administrativt ansatte og rundt 20 masterstudenter.
Sammen dekker våre forskere et bredt spekter av vitenskapelig ekspertise: Vi er geofysikere, petrologer, geokjemikere, geobiologer, paleontologer, mikrobiologer, bioinformatikere, marinbiologer, og taksonomer. Vår hovedstyrke ligger i kombinasjonen av vår mangfoldige bakgrunn, og gjør oss i stand til å utføre banebrytende forskning som utvider vår kunnskap om dyphavet og dets ressurser.
